Super Gym was started in 1980 by Joe Evans in the building that had previously been the McDaniel-Walker automotive showroom located on south 5th Street. It was moved to its current location on 5th Ave in Sept, 1990. While he no longer owns the gym, Mr. Evans remains a member and still gets his workouts in at the gym. When he started the gym, Mr. Evans would spend about 2 weeks working with new members to help them learn the equipment and set up a routine. Helping people achieve their fitness goals was a passion for him. The gym membership has grown significantly since its original 27 members, and while this degree of one on one attention is no longer possible, there are several different workout plans available at the front desk for members to use. It’s a small tribute to the past that can help ease some of the intimidation that often impacts new members.
Marvin and Chris purchased the gym in 2019 and their passion for fitness shows in the gym remodels they have accomplished and their plans for continued improvements. These two families have been working throughout their spare time to remodel portions of the adjoining building and will increase the overall size of the gym. Much like it was for the Evans’, The Super Gym is a labor of love for these families. They maintain full time jobs and volunteer within the community in addition to running the gym. For those who participated in the Alligator Trot, you probably saw these incredible people. They were the ones smiling at the finish line greeting participants with a wonderful selection of water, juices and fruit.
45 years in business is an incredible accomplishment for any business, but even more so for an independent gym. It says a lot about the passion of the people running it and the clientele frequenting it. If you are looking for a great place to workout, this is it!
